Driver Education Information
Cardinal O’Hara Driver Education Course open to all area high school students
Our Driver Education Program is open to students from all local high schools and Cardinal O’Hara High School. The Driver Education Program is offered several times throughout the year: Spring, Summer, and Fall. The New York State Department of Education requires that each student in the Driver Education Course attends 24 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of in-car driving instruction. Each student must successfully complete the written and driving skills tests.
Students must have a valid New York State Permit or License prior to the start of the first class.
The cost is $950 per student and includes both 16 ninety-minute classroom and 16 ninety-minute in-car driving sessions over an eight-week period.
Fall Program 2026
Classroom Instruction– All Students attend 16 Classroom Sessions:
November 2, 2026 – January 8, 2027
Mondays – 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm and Fridays – 3:20pm – 4:50pm
No classroom or in-car driving instruction November 11, 25, 26, 27, 28 and December 23 through January 2nd
In-car Driving Instruction– Students Choose Monday & Friday or Tuesday & Thursday:
Monday & Friday – November 2 – January 8
- Monday 3:20pm – 4:50 pm and Friday 5:00pm-6:30pm
- Monday 5:00pm – 6:30pm and Friday 6:45pm-8:15pm
Tuesday & Thursday – November 3 – January 7
- 3:20pm – 4:50pm
- 5:00pm – 6:30pm
- 6:45pm – 8:15pm
The driving sessions will start and end at Cardinal O’Hara High School near the Performing Arts entrance.
Benefits of Driver Education
Students who complete all 24 hours of classroom requirements, all 24 hours of in-car requirements and pass both in-car and classroom instruction, with a grade of 65 or above, will receive a NYS Department of Motor Vehicles form MV-285 and insurance certificate allowing:
- Senior driving privileges (driving past 9 pm) at 17 years of age
- Possible reduction of auto insurance premiums
- Completion of New York State-mandated requirements for new drivers
